UniTV Does Black Mirror

Collaborating with UniTV (University of Sussex Student Television) on their big short film of the year 16/17, we were inspired by Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’ series. Delving into a near future where the public aspire to look like their idol, ‘Adonia’.

Little does the world know; there is more to their idol than meets the eye…

On the project, we worked as Director / Director of Photography / Editor / Visual FX / Colourist, alongside a fantastic team provided by UniTV.

Focusing on the themes and tones of the original series, ‘Black Mirror’, we worked closely with the writers to bring together a contrasting tone of warmth and bleakness, which was focused on within the colour schemes throughout the film.

Similar to our previous styles, we aimed to have the audience understand the film world gradually and not introduce them to everything straight away. This often results in the audience understanding and feeling the power of the outcome of main protagonists action at the same time, heightening the emotional effect.

The majority of the film was shot to have a very soft and cloudy feel to the imagery to reflect the obscurities of the society the film is set in, but has well contrasting and sharp imagery at points of realisation and reveal.

We had great fun shooting the fake commercial scenes, allowed us the chance to practice all kinds of lighting techniques used by current adverts with heavy diffusion. This helped to create the softness and false security of Adonia’s “character”.

The editing process of this project was a very enjoyable one. The film seemed to flow very naturally from the start to finish. The time limit of cutting down to under 10 minutes from an original 4 hours and 30 minutes of video footage really highlighted the scale of the project and was great fun to have so much to play with.

Overall, ‘UniTV Does Black Mirror’ has been a wonderful and fairly stress free project, thanks to the amazing producers that held the project together. We can’t wait to share it with the world in as many ways as we can.
